High Humidity Causes Mold in the Basement in Colts Neck, NJ
Challenge
A homeowner in Colts Neck, NJ found themselves with mold growth in their basement storage room because of high indoor humidity levels. The homeowner already had the storage room waterproofed and contacted Mold Solutions to treat the mold. This storage room had old wooden shelves along the wall that had fairly extensive mold growth. Mold will consume any organic materials, so the growth on the wooden shelving was not surprising. The shelving was not worth that much and we removed some of the old wood shelving where there was extensive growth, but the homeowners wanted to keep the main framing of the shelves.
Solution
First, we treated the area with our EPA-registered antimicrobial solution called Mold Abatement Polymer Solution 1, or MAPS 1. This product attacks mold on a cellular level and kills it instantly. We then used our mold stain remover, scrubbed away all the excess mold staining, and then applied our patented sealant MAPS 2. This application encapsulates the surface mold is growing on and renders it harmless and non-allergenic. MAPS 2 is also moisture-sensitive and will reactivate whenever it gets wet to prevent future mold growth.
To control the humidity levels, we installed a commercial-grade dehumidifier. These dehumidifiers cost less to run than other dehumidifiers, cover over 3000 square feet, and are energy efficient. They also turn on and off automatically using a built-in hygrometer that measures indoor humidity levels, and they discharge into the home’s drainage system so there is no water tray to empty. These dehumidifiers are a great investment for keeping mold out of below-grade areas and improving the indoor air quality of your home.
