Mold From the Attic to the Basement in Lawrence Township, NJ
Challenge
A homeowner in Lawrence Township, NJ called our office after spotting some mold growth in his basement, so we were sent out to inspect and remediate. We arrived, equipped our personal protective equipment, and began inspecting the basement. Sure enough, we found mold growth all over the walls in the basement. To determine to cause of the mold growth, we used our hygrometer, which measures the humidity and the amount of moisture in the air, and determined that the humidity levels in the basement were extremely high.
Your home will feel most comfortable at humidity levels between 30 - 50%. Too much humidity can cause condensation on windows, wet stains on walls and ceilings, moldy bathrooms, musty odor, and/or clammy feel to the air. Rot and structural damage can also result from extended periods of high humidity in your home and can attract pests.
As we were reporting our findings to the homeowner, we noticed a wet area by the attic stairs. We decided to inspect the area and discovered even more mold throughout the entire attic! Turns out the homeowner had a rather large leak in his roof that he never knew about and because it wasn't addressed for quite some time, mold had developed.
The homeowner called a professional roofer who will repair the leak in his attic. That will fix the conducive conditions, now we just need to remove the mold.
Solution
The first thing we did was apply our antimicrobial solution called Mold Abatement Polymer Solutions 1, or MAPS 1 for short, throughout the entire basement and the attic. This product attacks mold at its DNA and immediately kills it. Afterward, we then wiped away the mold and applied a patented sealant called MAPS 2. MAPS 2 encapsulates the surface that the mold is growing on and renders it harmless and non-allergenic. It is also moisture-sensitive and reactivates whenever it gets wet to prevent any future mold growth.
Then, to control the humidity levels in the basement, we installed a Sedona dehumidifier. This commercial-grade dehumidifier will keep the humidity levels in the basement at an appropriate, safe, and comfortable level. Now that the conducive conditions in both the attic and the basement have been addressed and MAPS 1 & 2 has been applied, the homeowner will no longer have any issues with mold in his home.
