Water Leak Causes Major Mold in the Kitchen in Middletown, NJ
Challenge
These Middletown, NJ residents had a slow leak under their kitchen sink that had gone unnoticed for quite a while until the cumulative effect of this water took hold. The sink cabinet itself started to warp and rot. Also, mold had started to grow on the sheetrock behind the cabinets. Any water intrusion event can trigger mold growth. You don’t need flooding for mold to form — homeowners can find themselves with a mold problem from slow-leaking pipes, condensation around air ducts, and chronic humidity problems (especially in basements and crawl spaces).
Solution
Typically, we are able to treat the mold in its place and avoid unnecessary tear-outs, however, when the area is saturated and severely damaged, like in this case, we had to tear out the old moldy cabinets and the moldy sheetrock behind the cabinets. We performed a mold treatment, applying our two products to the mold-affected areas under the kitchen sink area. We first applied an EPA-registered antimicrobial called MAPS 1. MAPS 1 attacks mold on a cellular level and immediately kills it. Next, we used our mold stain remover and scrubbed away all the mold growth.
After that, we applied our patented sealant called MAPS 2. MAPS 2 is a moisture-sensitive application that encapsulates the surface mold is growing on and renders it harmless, inert, and non-allergenic. Now, with the mold treated, their kitchen was safe and mold-free. They were ready to have their new cabinets and counters installed next week without worrying about whether mold was hiding in the dark corners of their kitchen.
