Winter's Impact On Mold Growth
The harsh winter and its freezing temperatures, snow and ice resulted in a lot of home water damage. Under the right conditions and when not thoroughly dried out, that water damage could turn into mold and mildew growth.
Mold can cause health issues, allergic reactions, unsightly areas within your home and more. If you experienced any of the following scenarios you should watch those areas closely for mold growth:
- Ice damming that resulted in a leak to your roof
- Frozen pipes that burst within the home
- Water in your basement
Mold can grow quickly, particularly if the water was not properly dried. The EPA recommends that you thoroughly dry damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.
If you were unable to dry the water leak within that time frame be sure to monitor these parts of your home for mold growth.
If you do notice mold growing in these areas or, if the area is not visible, you may notice a mold or mildew smell in that area of the home, then you should have a mold inspection. Promptly addressing mold in your home has many benefits.
First of all, mold is a growing problem so while certain seasons and conditions within the home may not be conducive to mold growth rest assured when moisture, temperature and humidity rise to within mold’s favored range it will grow causing a wider spread mold problem that needs to be addressed.
