After Holiday Checklist to Keep Your Home in Order

After Holiday Checklist to Keep Your Home in Order - Image 1

For most of us the holiday season is filled with lots of family, fun and tons of time preparing food. From cookies that you bring neighbors to big family dinners, your kitchen has probably had a real workout. Just like a person who has exercised just a little too hard, your kitchen could be hurting a little from being overworked. Here are three things to check, post holidays, to make sure your kitchen made it out of the holiday season unscathed.

  1. While assistance in the kitchen can be helpful it can also lead to problems. Did it take until the ninth plate of food scraps being sent down your kitchen sink before Aunt Susan realized you don’t have a garbage disposal? Really foul odors can appear if there are blockages due to food residue in your pipes. Your first course of action can be a simple DIY process. Gather together baking soda, lemon juice, white vinegar and boiling water. Pour a cup of baking soda and lemon juice into the drain and let it sit for approximately fifteen minutes. Then add a cup of white vinegar. This should make the baking soda mixture bubble. Lastly, flush the drain with boiling water. Let the sink water run for a little while to continue to flush the drain. If foul odors continue to be a problem, you may have a more serious issue and it may be time to contact a professional.
  2. Another issue that can arise over the holiday season is an overload of your electrical system. Some older homes were not wired to handle the size and number of appliances used to make a holiday dinner today. It is good practice to go around to the electrical outlets in your kitchen and inspect them. Do any of your outlets fall out easily or have a burning smell? While you were making your holiday dinners, were your electric outlets hot to the touch or did the use of one outlet frequently trip the circuit breaker? If so, it is probably a good time to bring in an electrician to take a closer look at your electrical system.
  3. Cooking and baking can release nice aromas into your kitchen, but they also can release a lot of moisture which increases the room’s humidity level. Another culprit for the increase in humidity levels is the dishwasher. With lots of holiday guests around it is likely that your dishwasher was used more than normal. In many situations moisture is good, but in a kitchen the moisture level can get too high and the result may be mold growth. If you have a good ventilation system (an exhaust fan that is vented outdoors) and your pipes are not leaking you are on the right track to have a mold free kitchen. Even if this is the case it is a good idea to inspect your kitchen for signs of mold.

If you do find mold, don’t panic. With our patented and modern techniques, mold remediation in as little as one day is possible. An added bonus, our mold experts can help you understand the root cause of your mold problem and how to fix it so that it will not return.
