Can Mold Destroy a Business? 

The short answer is yes. Mold can be harmless, think blue cheese. Mold can even be beneficial, as is the case with penicillin. But mold, like black mold, can have a devastating effect if it is in the building where your business is located. Mold is a serious problem that could have serious ramifications for your business.

In 2019 patients at Seattle Children’s Hospital were exposed to the mold Aspergillus. This was not the first time there was an exposure at the hospital, in fact, there had been problems since as far back as 2001. There have been lawsuits in the past and the hospital has had to pay significant amounts of money. The most recent court case, the one that started January 29, 2024 may turn out to be the most costly case yet.

So why should you care about a court case that is literally happening on the other side of the country? You should care because this is just one example of how seriously people take mold exposure. In the Seattle Children’s Hospital case from 2022 a group of plaintiffs were asking for $40 million in compensation. Here in New Jersey there was a $1.8 million verdict in favor of a single Milburn, New Jersey music teacher because of their exposure to mold.
