There are many steps in the renovation process, but the most agreed upon first step is to remove everything from the room you are renovating. Look for discoloration on your walls or floor. Mold can grow under carpets and on the inside of walls. You will not always see the tell-tale black fuzzy stuff on your wall because the actual mold may be on the interior side, but in this case there is often a discoloration of the wall that faces the room. Give a careful look to your carpets as well. Sometimes furniture can cover areas where mold has had the chance to grow. If you are doing a major renovation, one that involves removing walls, spotting mold is a lot easier. Unfortunately, leaky pipes inside walls can lead to mold and the easiest way to see this damage is when the sheetrock on the walls is removed. If you are taking down walls, make sure to inspect both the back of the sheetrock as well as the studs for any signs of mold.
